Ricercare means ‘to search’ or ‘seek out’. The genre has its roots in imitative keyboard works of the late
Renaissance. Like scholarly research, it takes a subject and examines it again and again, from all angles, up
and down, front and back, in ever smaller fragments, before viewing it as a whole once more. The
combination of logic and passion is what makes great research. This piece is a tribute to the musicologist
Ita Beausang, who has spent a lifetime researching many aspects of music in Ireland.

We must forge our own identity again and again through the creative act. This act could be the stacking of Lego bricks or it could be the composition of a symphony. Composition literally means ‘putting together’ (like playing with Lego!). It is only through this serious type of creative play called ‘culture’, can we find out who we are or who we can be. In my composition, I have recycled music mentioned in the poem, from nursery rhymes to Jimi Hendrix, and music that is not mentioned in the poem, from Dr Dre to George Frederick Handel. I have quoted this music not only because it was particularly apt in the context of the poem, but also to say something more profound to young performers, who are perhaps singing on stage for the very first time: every area of culture is open for your appreciation, with treasures to be explored and then plundered for creative ends to say something new. You are as welcome into the house of Handel as you are into the house of Hendrix—in fact, these two composers lived next door to each other (but two hundred years apart!).

Sure I know… lookit… this is it…yah, yah, yah…desperate…I’m sure…

These and similar expressions will be familiar to anyone who’s ever had a conversation in Ireland. Known to linguists as ‘back channeling’, they are verbal and non-verbal cues used to signal that the listener is paying attention to the story. The speaker and the listener collaborate in telling the story through these expressions. Back channeling is among the hallmarks of Irish conversation that I have incorporated into this song, along with the fast pace, rhetorical repetitions, talking across each other, disagreement couched in the mildest of terms, and the Ulster dialect of English.

Since its invention, the orchestra has been used as a metaphor for smaller entities that work together to produce a greater whole—for civil society, the army, the human body, nature, and machines. I wanted to update these metaphors for the twenty-first century when I wrote my last orchestral piece, Hive Mind, in 2015, so I devised a survey in which the orchestra made suggestions such as the brain, a giant jigsaw, a multi-layered conversation, and a railway terminal, and the European Union. The last of these suggestions now seems hopelessly quixotic after the Brexit vote, the Trump presidency, and the rise of the alt-right in America and populist movements across Europe. All Against All is the evil twin of Hive Mind; a Mr Hyde to the latter’s Dr Jekyll. The title is derived from the seventeenth-century philosopher Thomas Hobbes’s famous description of human existence in the state of nature as

… that condition which is called War; and such a war as is of every man against every man. […] In such condition there is no place for Industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no Culture of the Earth; no Navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no Letters; no Society; and which is worst of all, continual Fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. (Leviathan, Chapter XIII)

In All Against All, instruments are pitted against each other: in a nod to the title of Hobbes’s masterwork, the heart of the piece depicts the stately battle between two sea monsters (the heavy brass vs the celli-bass); the war is waged on multiple levels: at first between families of instruments, and then among instrumental families, and then, finally, all against all.

I am fascinated by the centuries-long tradition of using the orchestra as a metaphor—for heavenly choirs, civil society, the army, the human body, nature, machines—so I wanted the input of the Kensington Symphony Orchestra to update the metaphor of the orchestra for the twenty-first century; to this end, I devised a survey where the players suggested modern metaphors for the orchestra, which included the brain, a giant jigsaw, a multi-layered conversation, the European Union, and a railway terminal. Most of the suggestions, however, chimed with my own idea for an orchestral metaphor, of a collective intelligence or a unified consciousness, a Hive Mind.

I wanted to convey this idea of swarm intelligence by giving the music the appearance of a natural emergent process. An emergent process is that by which larger patterns arise through interactions among smaller and simpler entities. Think of an elaborate ant-hill ‘cathedral’, or the regular patterns of the Giant’s Causeway, or the ripples of sand on a beach—all examples of emergent structure in nature. Thus, the music consists of individual repeated melodic cells that are interwoven to create a larger pattern. No larger pattern, however, repeats exactly; in each of the piece’s three sections the repeated interactions of the smaller parts always combine to progress from chaos to order.

Hive Mind opens with iridescent waves of sound, that gently break over each other, which eventually coalesce. Momentum builds until the swarm breaks into an off-kilter dance. Malcontents rebel against the hive, and struggle against its constrictions but are soon subsumed back into the hive mind. The delicate flute solo that begins Debussy’s L’après-midi d’un faune is co-opted into the role of an alarm call that summons the hive to swarm once more.

This piece celebrates the 120th anniversary of the foundation of the Culwick Choral Society. This remarkable continuity is captured in the poem ‘The Happy Grass’ by the renowned Irish poet Brendan Kennelly, which honours the eternal nature of song in society. A calm, reflective opening, which commemorates past singers, is contrasted with a danse macabre in which the text becomes muddled to reflect the ‘delusions of communication’ of speech, that the poet contrasts with the true communication of song. Finally, opening musical material returns, reflecting the cyclical nature of life, and assuring us that though life may pass away, the tradition of song is everlasting. This setting, therefore, will honour all singers—past, present, and future—of the Culwick Choral Society.

In this darkly comic song from the West of Ireland, a madly jealous woman wants to break the legs and murder the wife of the eponymous ‘Wee Paddy’, so she can have him all to herself. In this arrangement, the woman attempts to maintain a veneer of respectability by singing a sean-nós (old-style) song, but the mask soon slips and she descends into a jealous, murderous rage: the insistent ostinato in the inner voices becomes ever more obsessive; in the melody, the number of repetitions of ‘nach mise’ (not I) increases with each refrain; cross-rhythms exchange blows as the woman wishes for broken bones; the lamento bass in the chorus is extended into a chromatic fourth, or passus duriusculus by the end, a venerable symbol of lamentation.
