Description
Saint Columba (521–97CE), or Colm Cille in Irish, meaning dove of the church, was an Irish abbot and missionary, credited with spreading Christianity in what is today Scotland. He is the Patron Saint of Derry. This is one of three surviving early medieval Latin hymns attributed to him. This musical setting emphasises the insistent stresses, repetitions, and rhymes of the hymn. The opening melody, which spans all voices in fragments, gradually builds into an emphatic homophony on the word ‘omnium’ (all), symbolizing the community-building mission of early Christian monasticism.
